Work in Progress: Personal Interior Design Project - Ladrón de Guevera, Guadlajara, MX
Designing a home or apartment for myself have always been the most difficult interior design projects. This is the main reason I still don’t have a dining room table in my Guadalajara apartment after nearly 8 months of living here.
When I lived in Petaluma, California, I would always narrow my choices down to 3 or 4 fabrics, sofas, tables, rugs or whatever I was currently looking for and ask my amazing friend Karen to make the decision for me. I am a firm believer that there are always thousands of “perfect” fabrics for a throw cushion. PRO TIP: If you are having trouble making finally decisions for your interior design, find a trusted friend that has similar design taste to yours to make the decision for you. Karen and I actually have very different taste, but I would say we have the same level of design.
This interior design project is very different from most of the beach projects we have been working on in Puerto Vallarta, Punta Mita all the way to Laguna Beach, CA. I live in the Ladrón de Guevara neighborhood of Guadalajara on the edge of Colonia Americana. My apartment is located in a renovated midcentury office building. For this reason and that midcentury modern is currently in the zeitgeist, I want to infuse a bit of that style into the apartments design. Just a bit though.
The inspirational photos above my seem disconnected but when I look at them I see different idea for color, materials, custom furniture design, and space planning.
The Inspirational Breakdown
Inspiration 1. Even though the colors in the photo to the far right is off, I love the color palette mixture I see of muted forest green, navy blue, natural linen (could be translated into wood), pale grey blue, and blood red. At this time, my Guadalajara apartment has a custom forest green sectional with a semi-midcentury modern vibe, a coffee table that is too bulky for the space, and crimson red with black Irish linen drapes using Moygashel fabric Toibin 05 Color 02. I also love the built-in console sized workspace that transitions into a built-in sofa.
Inspiration 2: Since I can’t change the hard finishes in this rental apartment, this photo is purely for color, texture, richness, and materials. I’m always (but shouldn’t be) surprised at how often I absolutely fall in love with Australian interior design firms. I don’t know what it is that makes their designs so bold and restrained at the same time. I love walking into a moody bathroom, and the mixture of dark teal blue and crimson is perfection for me. The vanity design is on point too. Arent & Pyke are genius to incorporate the two high gloss drawers in a space that most designers would ignore as wasted space or completely enclose ruining the proportions of this stunning bathroom.
